Fresh Water Biodiversity Project for NAFFIRI

Fresh Water Biodiversity Project for NaFIRRI

Project Overview

The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) needed an advanced digital platform for their Fresh Water Biodiversity Project. We delivered a cutting-edge research management system that revolutionizes how aquatic biodiversity data is collected, analyzed, and shared.

Project Highlights

  • Species Database: Comprehensive catalog of 1,500+ freshwater species with taxonomic classification
  • GIS Integration: Interactive mapping of water bodies, sampling points, and species distribution
  • Field Data Collection: Mobile app for researchers to record observations offline
  • Water Quality Monitoring: Real-time sensor data integration from 50+ monitoring stations
  • Research Collaboration Portal: Secure workspace for multi-institutional research teams
  • Publication Management: Automated formatting and citation tools for research papers
  • Public Dashboard: Citizen science module for community engagement

The Challenge

NaFIRRI researchers were using disconnected spreadsheets and legacy software to manage complex biodiversity data. Critical data was at risk of loss, and collaboration between research teams was extremely difficult.

Our Solution

We built a cloud-based platform that standardizes data collection, automates analysis, and facilitates real-time collaboration. The system supports complex taxonomic data structures and integrates with international biodiversity databases.

Scientific Features

  • DNA barcode sequence management
  • Statistical analysis tools (R and Python integration)
  • Automated species identification using AI
  • Environmental DNA (eDNA) data processing
  • Climate change impact modeling

Impact Delivered

  • Data collection efficiency improved by 200%
  • 15 research papers published using platform data
  • Connected 12 research institutions across East Africa
  • Identified 23 previously unrecorded species
  • Platform now serves as model for other African research institutes
